John D. Hinton, a lifelong resident of Metuchen, NJ, died peacefully on February 27,
2023, at home in Lake Ariel, with his wife at his side.

John was born in Perth Amboy, New Jersey, the son of the late John D. Hinton and
Jeanne Delaney Hinton. His grandfather, John A. Delaney, was the mayor of Perth Amboy from
1940 to 1950. A resident of Metuchen since 1954, John attended St. Francis School and
graduated from Metuchen High School in 1965. He attended Franklin Pierce College in Rindge,
New Hampshire, before volunteering for the draft in 1966.

John served his country honorably in the U.S. Army from 1966 to 1968, including
serving a tour of duty in Vietnam with the First Infantry Division, where he was the
communications section chief for Company B, 1st Medical Battalion. Known by the call sign
“Dr. Bravo,” John directed “Dustoff” helicopters to evacuate wounded soldiers from the
battlefield to the base hospital, and was awarded the Bronze Star for Meritorious Service.
Following his return from service, John joined NJ Bell in 1969 as an installer, and would
rise through the ranks to become a member of the National Security Emergency Preparedness
organization of Bellcore, where he was recognized as an expert in the area of earthquake disaster
planning. At the time of his retirement in 2000, he was the manager of the Verizon Regional
CLEC Maintenance Center. In all, he enjoyed a thirty-one-year career in the Bell companies.
He then went on to work for several more years as a Senior Consultant for Bearing Point,
and was recognized as a Certified Business Continuity Professional by the Disaster Recovery
Institute International, and also continued to work as an independent telecom contractor and
consultant.

John had also served the community by volunteering on the Metuchen Municipal Pool
Commission from 1980 to 1989, including several years as Chairman. He was an active member
of a number of other organizations, including the Society of the First Infantry Division; the
Vietnam Veterans of America; the Dustoff Association; the Aircraft Owners and Pilots
Association; and the Association of Contingency Planners. He also served as President of the
Hideout Adult Social Group. John and Laura were active members of the St. Thomas More
parish in Lake Ariel.

In his leisure time, John loved being outdoors, and had many special interests — fishing,
sailing, boating, flying, music, dancing, and doing many of his own home improvements. John
earned a Private Pilot license in 1970, and flew actively for more than 20 years. He was a loving
father to his two daughters, taking great pride in them, and in his four grandchildren.
Many of those who knew John will remember him as “Jake,” a larger-than-life character
with a wonderful sense of humor, an infectious laugh, a gregarious love of his friends and family
and a helping hand for all. He is survived by his beloved wife of 30 years, Laura Daley Hinton;
his daughter Katherine Hinton Eosso, and her husband, Joe, and grandsons Michael and
Christopher John; daughter Alison Hinton Almeida, her husband Jose, and granddaughters Emily
and Lily. His dear sister, Jane Hinton Van Etten, and her husband Jim, of State College, Pa,
along with several nieces and a nephew, and many cousins, also survive Jake. Stepdaughter
Sharon Morrissey of Old Bridge, NJ, granddaughter Ashleigh, grandson Justin; and Denise
Daley of Branchburg, NJ, granddaughter Madison Horensky, and grandson Brendon also survive
him.

Family and friends are invited to James Wilson Funeral Home, 143 Gravity Road, in
Lake Ariel, Pa for visitation on March 11, from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm. A celebration of his life
will follow immediately at 1:00 pm.

A private cremation was performed at Lake Region
Crematory.

Interment of ashes in the Canaan Street Cemetery in Canaan, New Hampshire, will
take place at a later date. John always had a special love for Canaan, and cherished many grand
memories of his childhood summers with family and lifelong friends who have gathered in
Canaan for more than 75 years.
