Donald “Sam Chapman, lifelong resident of Lake Ariel, died Monday after an illness. His wife is the former Hilda Michl. The couple was married in 1959.

Born in Hamlin, he was the son of the late Clifton and Dorothy Deming Chapman. He was a member of the class of 1954 of the former Lake Consolidated School and graduated from Lackawanna Business College. Sam was a self-employed Nationwide Insurance Agent in Hamlin for 40 years as well as a partner in LA Commercial Services and Finch Technology. He served on the Board of Directors of both LA Bank as well as Pennstar Bank. He was a member of the Centenary United Methodist Church.

His various memberships include the Lakeview Hunting Club, the Elmhurst Country Club, the Honesdale Golf Club, the Lake Ariel Lions Club and Salem Lodge F&AM 330.

Sam was a proud 50 year voter in Wayne County and served the people of Wayne County as a Republican Commissioner from 1994-2004.

An avid hunter and fisherman, he loved elk hunting trips to Colorado and bear and rabbit hunting trips to Maine.

He loved going to Syracuse Basketball games with his family and “Syracuse Joe as well as attending the Masters, Super Bowl, Rose Bowl, the NCAA Final Four, World Series and Stanley Cup.

He was an avid fan of the Syracuse Orange, Dallas Cowboys, Philadelphia Flyers and Phillies, Boston Red Sox, and Penn State Nittany Lions.

Most of all he loved spending time with and watching his beloved grandsons grow.

Also surviving are a daughter Teri Crisp and her husband Ken of Baltimore, MD; a son Brian and his wife Andy of Lake Ariel; a brother D. James Chapman of Sterling; sisters Judith Franc of Lake Ariel and Wendy D’Agostino of Sterling; grandsons Alex and Jamie Chapman; three nieces Kelly Teeple, Vicky Botjer and Danielle D’Agostino; a nephew Scott Franc.

Funeral services will be held Friday at 10am in the Centenary United Methodist Church Route 590 Hamlin with his sister Pastor Wendy DÁgostino officiating.

All are asked to go directly to the church.

Friends may call Thursday from 4-7 pm in the James Wilson Funeral Home 143 Gravity Rd. Lake Ariel.

Interment, Fairview Memorial Park Elmhurst.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Centenary United Methodist Church 632 Hamlin Highway Hamlin, Pa. 18427.
