It was 1958. I was a junior in my 11th year at Monroe Woodbury's newest high school on Route 32. One day that year they had what was called career day in the Mary W. Harriman auditorium. Two of the men who gave presentations caught my interest, Dory Wolsey, a professional automobile mechanic from Harriman and Trooper, Ben Coleman from the Monroe Barracks. Each had been invited to give students an insight into their respective avocations. I was impressed by both, but I could not resist spending time with Trooper Coleman's at his kiosk asking him questions about the State Police. I was at awe at his huge stature and immaculate uniform. He handed me a brochure and I read every word. I knew I wanted to be a NY State Trooper from childhood. Then at 17 years I realized I needed time to mature. After graduation and 5 years of military service I became a Trooper in 1965. I was stationed at Monroe Barracks and fortunately Trooper, Ben Coleman was a very senior member there and was instrumental in the development of many a trooper and subsequent successes. Rest In Peace Sir! A great trooper, man, & mentor.

My condolences to Ben's family on your loss. Although it's been thirty five years since we worked together I can still see his smiling face. Even though we worked in adjacent stations, SP Middletown and SP Monroe, I didn't really get to know Ben until we became part of the newly formed Troop F in 1968. Ben was about ten years senior to my contemporaries and I who were assigned to the Middletown Barracks Patrol. In those days "The Old Breed" troopers of Ben's era could be pretty intimidating to us young kids. Ben couldn't have been farther from that mold. Ben always wore a smile and always had the time to explain how to do something we hadn't yet encountered - often with a funny vignette from his past of what might happen if things weren't done the right way. On those long nights when Ben was working in the Communications Section and I was assigned to the Middletown desk, we would get the opportunity to talk about a variety of subjects. The depth and breadth of his knowledge was amazing - everything from obscure Orange County history to world events. One of the ways members of the state police rate other members is "Who would I want to show up at the door if a member of my family needed a trooper?" Ben would be at the top of the list. Again, my condolences. Dan Scribner, NYSP (ret.)

Claire and I would like to express our sincere condolences to Betty and family. Brother of Aunt Eve and part of the community at Mombasha, I had the opportunity to know him. I enjoyed interacting with him at scouting affairs and at family reunions. May he Rest In Peace.

To the family of Ben. I am deeply saddened by your loss and my sincere sympathy goes out to the entire family. I worked many years with Ben. First as a young Trooper in Middletown when we rode nights together. He was the gentle giant who taught recruits how to become great Troopers. I was also an Investigator in Monroe and could always count on Ben for anything. He was a mentor to all who worked with him. He will be missed my many. Bill Sprague Sr. Inv. NYSP (Retired)
