Per Sylvia’s request, funeral services will be private at the convenience of the family. The James H. Wilson Funeral home has been entrusted for the service.

Sylvia will be laid to rest next to her husband David in East Canaan Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, 200 Executive Blvd Suite #4b Southington, CT 06489 or The Varden Conservation Area, C/O The Promised Land State Park Complex, 100 Lower Lake Road, Greentown, PA 18426.

  Sylvia P. Shaffer, of Varden, Wayne County, PA passed away Saturday, June 18th, 2022 at the Ellen Memorial Health Center after a long illness due to Alzheimer’s Disease.  She was the widow of David F. Shaffer who passed away in 2010.  Sylvia was born in 1935 and raised in Honesdale, PA to parents Dr. Clarence Parks, VMD and Martha Shotwell Parks, RN.  Educated at Ithaca College with a BS in Physical Therapy, she received her masters at NYU. Her first employment was a two-year commitment to a field hospital in the countryside of Scotland. Upon return, her entire career was with the Lackawanna County Visiting Nurses Association as a home care therapist.

Throughout her life, Sylvia was involved in many enjoyable outdoor activities; winning the 1956 Morgan Trail Horse Trophy on her Morgan horse, Dyberry Minnie, at a Vermont 100- mile trail ride, sailing and cross-country skiing and time spent on her motorcycle.

                                        Sylvia was a lifetime girl scout from camper to counselor-waterfront director at Camp Archibald.  She was a supporter of the Scranton Pocono Girl Scout Council.

Sylvia was an active member of Lake Ariel United Methodist Church, member of the Varden Conservation Committee and a long- time member of the Order of the Eastern Star.

She is survived by her daughter, Tiffany Shaffer (Kimberly Czaja) of Middletown, CT, son, Eroh Shaffer (Karen) of South Carolina, brother, Lewis Parks and his daughter, Carla of Glen Aubrey, NY, sister-in-law, Carolyn Parks of Waymart, PA, brother-in-law, Dr. Mead Shaffer, VMD of Boothwyn, PA, aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews.

Besides her parents, Sylvia was predeceased by her twin brother, George Parks, and a sister-in-law, Joan Parks.
