Robert O. Hughes of Lake Ariel died Monday at home. His wife was the former Charlotte Bender who died in 2004. The couple had been married for 58 years.

Born in Scranton, son of the late Owen and Alice Ovens Hughes, he was a graduate of the Lake Consolidated School Class of 1946. He has worked for the Roger Brothers Coal Mine in Dickson City, for the Delaware and Lackawanna Railroad as a fireman on Steam Locomotives in Hoboken, NJ, for the Orange Roller Bearing Co. in Orange, NJ where he was the Superintendent of Manufacturing, and for the Berliss Bearing Co. on Livingston, NJ where he retired as the Plant Manager.

When Bob retired in 1990 and moved back to his hometown of Maplewood, he decided to start walking for exercise and as long as the weather permitted he tried to walk at least one mile a day and sometimes two. At a rate of 200 to 250 miles a year he had walked a minimum of 3000 miles by 2005.

One of the benefits of walking was meeting people and over the years Bob made good friends and was only known to a lot of drivers as the old man that always waves to everyone.

Bob enjoyed photography, woodworking, computers, and designing, building, flying, and crashing radio controlled miniature aircraft.

He was known as Poppy to his grandchildren and his great-grandchildren and as Bob to the neighbor’s children. He loved them all and they loved him.

Surviving are a son Robert C. Hughes of Lake Ariel; a brother Paul Hughes of Williamsville, NY; grandchildren Kelly Hefty of Hollisterville, Patty Supanek of Vestal, NY, and Robby Hughes of Lake Ariel; great-grandchildren Autumn Hefty, Emily and Sarah Hughes, and Calvin Supanek.

Cremation took place in the Lake Region Crematory, Lake Ariel.

A Memorial service will be held at a future date in the James Wilson Funeral Home 143 Gravity Rd. Lake Ariel.
