Reverend Edward R. Scott, Pastor Emeritus of Saint Thomas More Church, Lake Ariel, died on Saturday, April 23, 2016 at St. Mary’s Villa, Elmhurst, PA.

Father Scott, son of the late Joseph Eugene and Helen Jordan Scott, was born in Scranton on October 25, 1929.  He received his early education Saint Mary of Mount Carmel, Dunmore and graduated from Dunmore High School.  Father attended the University of Scranton graduating with a B.S. in 1951.  He entered Christ the King Seminary, Saint Bonaventure, New York where he completed his studies for the priesthood.  He was ordained on May 26, 1956, in Saint Peter’s Cathedral, Scranton, by the Most Reverend Jerome D. Hannan, D.D., late Bishop of Scranton.

Father Scott was assigned as assistant pastor at St. Mary of the Mount Parish, Mount Pocono; St. Philomena’s Parish, Hawley; Saint John the Evangelist Parish, Honesdale; and Saint Ignatius Parish, Kingston.  He was appointed administrator of Saint Patrick’s Parish in White Haven in 1973 where he served until receiving his first pastorate at Saint Bernadette’s Parish, Canadensis on December 12, 1981.  Father Scott was Pastor of Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary Parish, Tunkhannock and St. Thomas More Parish, Lake Ariel where he served until his retirement and appointment as Pastor Emeritus on November 10, 2004.

As a retired priest Father Scott continued to serve the Diocese as administrator of several parishes, including, St. Ann’s, Tobyhanna; St. Therese, Shavertown, St. Thomas Aquinas, Archbald; and SS. Peter and Paul, Avoca.  During his retirement he also enjoyed serving in the Apostleship of the Sea Cruise Ship Priest Program.

Father Scott was also the Coordinator for Ecumenical and Human Affairs in the Wilkes-Barre Area; he served on the Diocesan Commission for Human Affairs and was the Spiritual Moderator of the Diocesan Cursillo Movement and Dean of Wayne County from January 1, 1992 until December 31, 1997.  He also served as chaplain on various mission trips nationally and internationally.

He is survived by a brother Joseph and wife Clare, Miami, Florida; and six nephews, Joe Scott, Florida; William and Joseph Conniff, Scranton; Matthew, Anthony and Nicholas Piela, North Carolina; one grandniece, Anjolie Scott, Miami.

He was preceded in death by a brother James.

A Pontifical Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by the Most Reverend Joseph C. Bambera, D.D., J.C.L., Bishop of Scranton, on Wednesday, April 27, at 11:00 a.m. at Saint Thomas More Parish, 105 Gravity Rd. Lake Ariel.

Viewing will take place at Saint Thomas More Parish, Lake Ariel, PA, on Tuesday, April 26, 2016, from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.  A Vespers service will be held at Saint Thomas More Parish, Lake Ariel, PA, on April 26, 2016 at 7:00 p.m.  There will also be a viewing on Wednesday from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the Mass.

Interment will be in Saint Catherine’s Cemetery, Moscow.
