Funeral services will be held Monday at 11am in the Centenary United Methodist Church, St. Route 590, Hamlin.

Friends may call Sunday from 2-5pm in the James Wilson Funeral Home 143 Gravity Rd. Lake Ariel and Monday morning from 10am until time of service in the church.

Spring interment, Salem Cemetery, Hamlin.

In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the Centenary United Methodist Church PO Box 126 Hamlin, Pa. 18427.

Marlyn L. Shaffer, Hamlin, died Thursday evening at home.   His was the former Margaret T. McPeek who died in 2007.  At the time of her passing the couple had been married 57 years.

Born in Scranton, he was the son of the late Laverne and Corinne Grossman Shaffer.   He attended school in Hamlin and at the Lake Consolidated School in Lake Ariel.   He was a lifelong member of the Centenary United Methodist Church where he served as a Trustee as well as an Auditor for many years and also served the community as a Board Member for the Salem Twp. Elementary School and the Wayne Memorial Hospital Board of Directors.  He was the owner of Shaffer Farms, Shaffer Pallet Manufacturing as well as previously owning the Hamlin Diner.

Marlyn left school at the age of 14 when he established a relationship with the Dairymen League CO OP to ship milk.   This started his long and storied career in agriculture.   He began Shaffer Farms where he and his family, along with Paul Krombel, dairy farmed which he excelled at.   In the 1970’s Marlyn branched out into growing crops.   Throughout his career in farming he was very active in numerous agricultural organizations to better agriculture and farming in general.  In 2006 Marlyn was bestowed the Pennsylvania Farm Bureau’s Highest Award in honor of his role in farming, the Distinguished Service to Agriculture Award.   In 2013 he was recognized by the Penn State Extension for producing the highest yield bushel per acre (No Till Division) of corn in the State of Pennsylvania.

Surviving are sons Brad and his wife Pamela of Massachusetts and Phillip and his wife Kristen of Lake Ariel;  daughters Joy Simons of Lake Ariel, Christine Smith and her husband Rick of Honesdale, Brenda Bolan and her husband Ward of New Jersey and Valerie Kirkconnell and her husband Paul of Toronto, Canada; a brother Blaine Shaffer of Hamlin;  ten grandchildren;  five great grandchildren;  several nieces and nephews.

He was also preceded in death by sisters Vivien Mary Shaffer, Liane Shaffer and Carol Shaffer Woodruff.
