Cremation took place at Lake Region Crematory, Lake Ariel.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Sunday, August 8 from 4:00pm – 8:00pm at Kennedy’s Grove, Waymart.

Arrangements have been entrusted to and are under the care and direction of James Wilson Funeral Home, Lake Ariel.

In lieu of flowers, the family encourages memorial contributions be made in Jonathan’s name to the Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation, 733 Third Ave, Suite 510, New York, NY 10017 (crohnscolitisfoundation.org), or a charity of the donor’s choice.

Jonathan Wayne Shaffer, 47, of Waymart, passed away peacefully Friday afternoon at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania following a long and courageous battle with Crohn’s disease.

Born in Carbondale, he is the son of Donald and Judy Skelton Shaffer of Waymart. He was a graduate of Western Wayne High School Class of 1992 and was employed in the parts department at Stadium International in Olyphant. He was a life member and past President of the Waymart Volunteer Fire Company. In his spare time, Jon enjoyed driving his truck, riding his motorcycle, fishing and creating lots of memories while helping his best friend Frank work on his race car.

Also surviving are his sisters Wendy Stoddard and her husband Douglas of Waymart, Naomi Spewak and her husband Zach of Waymart, and Sandra Beavers of Waymart; nephews Nathan Stoddard, Dakota and Jake Beavers; niece Emma Spewak; the Porreca Family; aunts, uncles, cousins, his Waymart Volunteer Fire Company Family, and many friends.

He was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Wayne & Ruth Parry Skelton of Waymart, his paternal grandparents Donald & Doris Enslin Shaffer of South Canaan and his aunt Christine Skelton of Waymart.

The family wishes to express their most sincere gratitude and appreciation to long-time friend of Jonathan and the family, Stacey Frederick and to the Medical Intensive Care Unit nursing staff at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania for the care and comfort they provided to Jon and the family.
