John “Big Bad John” Wood, Honesdale, died Monday unexpectedly while riding his tractor at home

Born 1928 in Welcome Lake, PA he was the son of the late John A and Augustive Browser Wood.  John worked as a coal miner, in the excavating business but his main employment and true love was farming.

He lived in Honesdale his entire life and did what he loved up until his last breath. He was a hard working farmer who put pride in what he did. Even though he couldn’t read and only went to school up to 7th grade because he had to quit to work on the farm for his family he was a master craftsman and could build anything from scratch. He loved to hunt, fish and watch westerns (John Wayne and Gunsmoke were his favorites). He was loved by so many friends and family.

At 88 he was still fixing things, and working outside. He would never let anyone slow him down or stop him from doing what he loved.

Surviving are daughters Linda Eldred of Mt Cobb, Sally Chumard and her husband Darrell of Hamlin and Rose Curtis of Honesdale; ten grandchildren; nineteen great grandchildren; three great great grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews; his best friend Lester Dirlam and his family of Honesdale.

He was preceded in death by his grandson Billy Wood; son in law Roland Eldred; sisters Pearl Bateman, Elsie Tiel and Mae Shaffer; brothers Richard and Gustive Wood.

Funeral services will be held Thursday April 20th at 11am in the Hamlin Assembly of God Church 613 Easton Turnpike Hamlin by Rev. Ken Claflin, pastor.

Friends may call Thursday morning from 10am until time of the service at the church.

Interment, Canaan Corners Cemetery.
