John Schmidt
May 13, 2024

John Schmidt, 93, of Waymart, passed away early Monday morning at home with his family by his side. His beloved wife of 62 years was the former Janet M. Wood who passed away in 2018.

Born in Brooklyn, NY, he was son of the late George Schmidt and Adrean Green-Schmidt.

He was a veteran of the United States Army having served honorably during the Korean conflict as a tank commander on the Northern front line during the battle for Old Baldy. He attained the rank of Sergeant.

Surviving is a son John Gerard Schmidt; a daughter Patricia Ann Hreha-Schmidt; and two grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, John was preceded in death by his three brothers, Thomas, Gerard, and Edward, and by his son-in-law Michael.

John was a devoted spouse and father, who enjoyed taking the family on month-long summer camping trips in his motor-home, most frequently to Pennsylvania, to which he later retired.

A devout Catholic, Mass was always attended on Sundays, even when traveling.
His home was always filled with cats, usually 2 or 3, but as many as 5 at one point.
He loved to travel, and recently went to Alaska, the Canadian Rocky Mountains, Cap Cod, Hawaii, and Iceland.
When he moved to South Canaan in 1989, John joined the Valley Bowling Senior Citizen league, and continued to bowl with his beloved friends until his passing. Those friends meant the world to him.

A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated Saturday, May 18 at 10 AM in Saint Mary’s Church 242 Carbondale Rd Waymart 18472.
Friends may call Friday from 5 to 8 PM in the James Wilson Funeral Home, 143 Gravity Rd., Lake Ariel, PA 18436.
Interment with military honors will take place in the Maplewood Evangelical Cemetery.
