Joan Belles, Lake Ariel, died Monday in the Geisinger Community Medical Center.   She was the widow of Richard Belles who died in 2007.

 

Born 1933 in Carbondale, she was the daughter of the late Harry L. and Mary J. Oberly Ramble.  A graduate of the Lake Consolidated School, she continued her education and graduated with honors from the Scranton Lackawanna Business School.   She attended the St Thomas More-St Mary’s Parish.   She had been employed as a secretary, at the Lake Consolidated School and went on to be a bookeeper, teacher’s aide and Librarian in various local schools throughout the Western Wayne District.

 

Joan was well known in the community for her dedication to, participation in and support of many organizations.   She was longtime member of the Lake Ariel Volunteer Fire Company Ladies Auxiliary and she was a founder, member and volunteer of the initial Salem Community Library when it started in the St. John’s Episcopal Church Carriage House and continued to be instrumental in the library when it moved to it’s current building.  She served as a judge of elections for over 40 years in Lake Twp. where she served as a Democratic Minority Inspector.

 

Surviving are her daughters Kathy Savitz of S. Canaan, Kim Williams of New York and Betsy Belles of California; a sister Betty Hamilton of Georgia; grandchildren William and Sara; a great grandson Russell, Jr.; nieces and nephews.
