Jane Cecelia Modry passed away peacefully in her sleep on Monday Sep. 8. Born Nov. 14, 1943 to the late Cecelia and Charles Modry in Flushing NY, she was a long time resident of Bayside NY before she retired to The Hideout in Lake Ariel PA.

Jane was an alumnus of Bayside High School where she began her athletic career, playing basketball. Following in her mother’s footsteps, she went on to SUNY-New Paltz where she earned a BS degree in Education. Jane or “Miss Mo” as she was known to her students, taught physical education and coached basketball (including a NY state championship team and a long term as CHSAA basketball secretary and scheduler), softball, and volleyball at St. Francis Prep in Fresh Meadows, NY for 38 years before retiring as Athletic Director. Among other honors and awards, she was recently enshrined in the St. Francis Prep Athletic Hall of Fame.

Jane was an avid golfer, bowler and played bar league softball into her 40’s. After she retired from teaching, she moved to the The Hideout where she was the Hideout Women’s Golf Association president and Bowling League secretary. She was a gambler who loved playing her slot machine at Mohegan Sun where “she never lost”. A member of St. Thomas More Parish in Lake Ariel, she was a lector and greeter at the 5pm Mass for many years.

She is survived by her brother William (Linda) Modry of New Albany, Ohio; a nephew Michael Moore and his wife Cindy and grandniece Katie of Grandview, Ohio; her aunt Marie Mara of Flushing, NY; cousins Patricia Dossie of Flushing, NY, Joan Miller and her husband George of Scottsdale, Arizona; her wonderful friends Miriam and Rafe Fernandez of Lake Ariel who cared for her; Midge Lennon and her husband Frank of Lake Ariel, a host of friends from The Hideout; Ron and Joann Wagner and family of Bayside, NY and numerous former students, teachers and administrators from St. Francis Prep.

A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated on Friday at 11:00am at St. Thomas More Church 105 Gravity Rd. Lake Ariel.

Friends may call Friday from 10:00-11:00am at the Church.

Burial will be in the family plot in Flushing, NY.
