Henry Matthews Jr., Hamlin, passed away surrounded by his family, Tuesday afternoon in the Geisinger Wyoming Valley Medical Center after an illness. His wife is the former Catherine Herman. Henry was brought home to God on Wednesday when Henry saved the lives of many others by donating his organs to those in need.
Born 1952 in Scranton, he was the son of the late Henry Sr. and Frances Fantini Matthews. He was a graduate of the Lake Consolidated School, Lake Ariel and was a member of the St Thomas More St Mary’s Parish Community. Henry served as a reservist in the Army National Guard. Prior to his retirement he was employed by the former Thomson Consumer Electronics, Dunmore.
Henry loved his family fiercely. In his retirement he could be found spending time with his wife, tending to his beloved pets, ‘putzing’ around outdoors, gardening, listening to the CB radio, or visiting with his sister and late brother-in-law.
He was also an aviation aficionado and pilot.
Also surviving are daughters Michelle Bedford and her husband Tom of Moosic and Nicole Yachera and her husband Brian of Olyphant; sister Sandra Rusin of Hamlin; grandchildren Harper and Piper Valentino, Lucy Bedford and Veronica Yachera; two nephews; cousins.
He was also preceded in death by his brother-in-law Joseph J. Rusin.
As per Henry’s wishes, cremation was held in the Lake Region Crematory at the James Wilson Funeral Home, Lake Ariel.
