Dorothy Marie Heraghty, 87, of South Canaan, passed away Saturday evening at Carbondale Nursing and Rehabilitation Center surrounded by her family. Her husband of 45 years, Francis Edward Heraghty passed away on September 1, 2002.

Born in Throop, Pa, she was the daughter of the late John and Elizabeth Zawacki – DeWork. She was a graduate of Scranton Central High School Class of 1954 and earned her Nursing Degree in New York City. She attended the Free Methodist Church of South Canaan.

In the true spirit of a nurse, Dorothy was a comfort to many others and their families. Including her siblings, especially at their end of life needs, she was a comfort and friend as a private nurse to neighbor Alan Adams. As a mother and wife, she was the strength and comfort of her family.

Surviving are her sons Frank Heraghty and his wife Lee Ann of Claremore, OK, Pat Heraghty and his wife April of Honesdale, Jim Heraghty and his wife Shawn of Elmira Heights, NY, and John Heraghty and his wife Kelly of Lake Ariel; son-in-law Charles Bessman of Pleasantville, NJ; a sister Betty Kloss of Scranton; grandchildren Heather, Megan, Erin, James, Maura, Kaylea, Louise, Samuel, and Issac; great-grandchildren Jamie and Jade; many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her daughter Kathy Bessman; grandchildren Thomas, Tirza, Timothy, and Grace; sisters Anna DeWork, Mildred Butchkovitz, and Agnes Kerchak; brother Alfred “Connie” DeWork.

A graveside service will take place on Monday, August 12^th at 11:00am in East Canaan Cemetery, South Canaan, with services by Pastor James Sheridan. Those wishing to attend the graveside service should report to the funeral home no later than 10:30am for the funeral procession.

Friends may call on Sunday, August 11^th from 2:00pm – 5:00pm in the James Wilson Funeral Home, 143 Gravity Road, Lake Ariel.
