Arrangements have been entrusted to and are under the care and direction of James Wilson Funeral Home, Lake Ariel.

Doris L Burke

September 23, 1932 – September 22, 2020

Doris L Burke, Honesdale, passed away one day before her 88th birthday at Ellen Memorial Health Care Center. She was the wife of the late Bruce R Burke of Honesdale, whom she was married to for 69 years prior to his death in 2018.

Born in Honesdale, PA and grew up in Lyndhurst, NJ, she was the daughter of the late Norman and Mildred Penwarden. Surviving is her son Bruce Wayne Burke and his wife Susan of Beach Lake, her daughter Georganna ‘Gann’ Corey and her husband David of Lake Ariel, two brothers, Richard Penwarden of Arizona and Walter Penwarden of Florida, four Grandchildren, six Great Grandchildren and two Great Great Grandchildren, nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her brother Donald Penwarden.

Doris worked for many years as a Nurse Aide at the Wayne Memorial Hospital in Honesdale. In 1960 Doris and her husband started their own printing business on the Brook Road, called Brudo Press. After nine years, they left the printing business to answer Gods call to be missionaries in South Africa, where they served for almost 40 years before coming back to the States due to age and declining health.

Doris was a very loving Wife, Mother, Grandmother, Great Grandmother and Great Great Grandmother. She loved her family deeply and they loved her. She was a wonderful example of a Godly wife and mother to her children.

Doris and her husband authored two books, one is the story of their lives and the second book for Pastors and Missionaries about serving on the Mission field.

The family wishes to extend their sincere gratitude to Ellen Memorial Health Care Center for their outstanding care and compassion for Doris.
