Friends may call Friday from 2-6pm in the James Wilson Funeral Home 143 Gravity Rd. Lake Ariel.

Interment, East Canaan Cemetery, South Canaan.

In lieu of flowers, the family strongly encourages memorial contributions be made to the Delta Medix Foundation for Cancer Care 236 Penn Ave. Scranton 18503.

Carol Joanna Smith Reed, 40, South Canaan, passed away Tuesday at home surrounded by her loving family.   She was the wife of Kurt Reed.

Born April 3, 1975 in Lancaster, she was the daughter of Leonard and Joanna Sittler Smith of Mount Joy.  Carol was a 1993 graduate of the Donegal High School in Mount Joy and earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Mathematics with a concentration in Secondary Education from Albright College as well as Master of Science Degrees in Mathematics and Learning Sciences and Technologies from Lehigh University.   She was a member of St. John’s Episcopal Church, Hamlin.  Prior to her illness Carol had been a faculty member of the Penn State Worthington, Scranton and the Lehigh Carbon Community College, Schnecksville in addition to several public schools in Lancaster and Berks counties.  Along with her teaching affiliations she was also an accomplished field hockey coach for the Eastern Lancaster County School District and the United States Field Hockey Association Futures Program.

Carol was a member of the Dorflinger Sudyam Sanctuary and was also a staff member of the Dorflinger Factory Museum.  She was also a member of the Phi Delta Sigma Honorary Alumnae Sorority, the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics, the Mathematics Association of America, the American Mathematical Society and the United States Field Hockey Association.

Also surviving are brothers Mark and his husband Donald of Steelton and Andrew and his wife Jennifer of West Lawn; two nieces Danielle and Abbie Smith; aunts and uncles; cousins; countless friends; and her special feline friend “Tony.”
