Doris Joanne Soden, 82, of Honesdale died Tuesday at the Allied Services Hospice Center following a brief illness. She was the widow of Lester E. Soden who died December 14, 2014. The couple had been married 63 years.

Born January 22, 1936, she was the daughter of the late Bryan and Gerlandine VanGorden Burdick. She was a graduate of Honesdale High School and a 50 year member of Central United Methodist Church.

She worked as a secretary for Signature Finance Co. for many years, then became a mother and homemaker. In 1986 her husband retired from E. Soden & Sons and started his own consulting business. Doris returned to being a secretary for her husband’s consulting business. She was awarded “Contractors wife of the year in 1976” from the Pa Land Improvement Contractors Assoc.

Doris was a former member of Honesdale Womens Club and Order of Eastern Star. Along with her husband, Doris built and maintained the church flower gardens for many years. She was volunteer for the American Cancer Society and participated in the research study – STAR – The Study of Tamoxifen and Raloxifene for the prevention of Breast Cancer at Mercy Hospital in Scranton.

She loved working in her flower gardens and doing crafts.

Surviving are sons David and his wife Sandy of Carbondale, Daniel and his wife Kristen of West Creek, NJ , and Steven and his wife Linda of Honesdale; a daughter Billie Lopatofsky of Bradenton, FL; a sister Betty Barna of Rochester, NY; grandchildren and great grandchildren; nieces and nephews.

Preceded in death by brothers Harold and Kenneth Burdick; sisters Barbara Burdick and Mildred Walichuck.

Funeral services will be held on Monday at 11 am at the Central United Methodist Church, 205 11th St. Honesdale, PA with Pastor Rob Kazinski officiating.

Friends may call on Monday from 9 – 10:45am in the Wesley Room of the Central United Methodist Church.

Interment, Indian Orchard Cemetery, Indian Orchard.
